00(M031) - No Social Distancing with Jesus!

In this trying hour of social distancing due to a worldwide plague, it's encouraging to remember that there is no social distancing with Jesus! He is near. He hasn't gone anywhere!

No Social Distancing With Jesus!

Romans 8:29-39, Psalms 73:28,119:151, 3 4:18, 139:1-10, Isaiah 50:8, 49:14-16,

Notes

During this very difficult hour in our nation, we have been advised (in some places ordered) to stay 6 feet away from each other to avoid spreading Covid-19.

This has given way to “virtual” everything:

  • the covid non-handshake,
  • covid non-hug,
  • covid virtual-conversation,
  • and covid seclusion.

But thank God, Jesus doesn’t have to keep His distance! As His child, I can draw near to Him and He to me! So I want to read one of my favorite portions of Scripture that assure us there is no social distancing between God and His children!

Bible Verse

Romans 8:29-32 (NIV)

29For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.

30And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.

31What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

32He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?

Notes

So the Apostle gives us many ways to know that God is FOR US: First, God had a plan. He has planned for us from before the world began to be conformed into the image of His Son! And secondly, God’s plan for us to be like His Son began when He CALLED us out of darkness into His marvelous light by turning to Jesus by faith. And thirdly, when we responded, He JUSTIFIED us—we were pardoned of all our sins through Jesus’ shed blood. And finally, having justified us, He will also one day GLORIFY us when we step into “the glory that shall be revealed,”—that is, the glorious place called heaven. Then Paul says that, since God went to the incredible length to offer up His only begotten Son, what else will He NOT DO for us! He is clearly FOR US!

In light of these things Paul contends:

Bible Verse

Romans 8:33-34 (NIV)

33Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies.

34Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.

Notes

No one and no devil can successfully charge, accuse, or condemn the blood bought child of God because the blood of Jesus is greater than all the accusations! And best of all, because of the power of Jesus’ blood, NOTHING can separate us from His love! Paul next rolls out a list of possible trials and tests that ALL FAIL to separate us from God’s love:

Bible Verse

Romans 8:35,37 (NIV)

35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?

37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

Notes

  • NO trouble
  • no attack
  • no lack
  • no hard times
  • no dangers
  • no threats
  • no physical assault
  • no Covid-19!

NONE OF THESE THINGS—can get in between the Christian and God’s love! So in the midst of this coronavirus plague, NOTHING can bring social distancing between the Lord and the person whose heart is right with Him! So I want you to know today that God is NEAR to you—inseparably, unstoppably near!

Listen to these verses that promise His nearness: David writes,

Bible Verse

Psalms 73:28 (NIV)

28But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign Lord my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds.

Bible Verse

Psalms 34:18 (NIV)

18The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

Bible Verse

Isaiah 50:8 (NIV)

8He who vindicates me is near. Who then will bring charges against me? Let us face each other! Who is my accuser? Let him confront me!

Notes

The Bible tells us that after the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians, God’s people began to believe that God had forgotten them. God spoke of their doubt through the Prophet Isaiah saying,

Bible Verse

Isaiah 49:14-16 (NIV)

14But Zion said, “The Lord has forsaken me, the Lord has forgotten me.”

15“Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!

16See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me.

Notes

God’s people were so important to Him that, figuratively speaking, He had engraved or tattooed their name on the palm of His hand! He said, “No matter your circumstances, I could NEVER forget you!” Likewise, some of God’s born again children may be thinking today, “God has forgotten us in these tough times!” But God says, “No! Never! I know you by name. I know your needs. I will never leave you nor forsake you!”

Now, let’s jump back to our text in Romans:

Paul asks, “Can anything separate us from Christ’s love—Including Covid-19 or social isolation?” The answer is NO! And he next lists everything that could possibly come between us and God, yet fail to do so:

Bible Verse

Romans 8:38-39 (NIV)

38For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,

39neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Notes

  • Dead or alive
  • angels or devils
  • things today or things tomorrow
  • things high up
  •  things down low

Nothing in the realm of all conceivable possibilities can successfully distance the Christian from God’s love! Twice Paul says that NOTHING will succeed!

David wrote in Psalms 139 his own version of how impossible it is for God’s children to be separated from Him:

Bible Verse

Psalms 139:1-10 (NIV)

1Psalm 139 You have searched me, Lord , and you know me.

2You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.

3You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.

4Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord , know it completely.

5You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me.

6Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.

7Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?

8If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.

9If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea,

10even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.

Notes

So beloved, God is above you, below you, beside you, before you, around you, and in you, and for you!  So until this strange chapter is over let’s make the most of it by drawing near to Jesus. You won’t have to wear latex gloves, or a face mask, or wash your hands with sanitizer afterward. His love will sustain us till we can safely meet again!
