Note

This passage is telling us something very important about survival in tough times: If your INNER MAN is strong, it will sustain you in pain or trials. If your INNER MAN is weak, you will faint in tough times.

The Bible says,

Note

What strength is this referring to? Your INNER strength. Your INNER MAN is that part of you that has been born again, made new and alive by the indwelling Holy Spirit after turning to Christ. Your INNER MAN touches every part of you—your emotions, your sense of well-being, your peace, your joy, your thoughts… It is through our inner man that we commune and fellowship with God.

Paul blessed the Corinthians with this benediction,

 Well, where is the Holy Spirit as it relates to the Christian? He lives within us, where our inner man is. The health of our inner man can even affect our body

Note

We live in a culture that places a high premium on physical fitness and outer appearance—but we RARELY consider whether or not our inner man is strong or weak! Yet a strong inner man is the key to surviving tough times! The Prophet Isaiah writes,

In other words, even the youngest and strongest among us have a breaking point in tough times. But Isaiah goes on to give the key to sustained strength during trial,

Note

Leaning on the Lord brings “inner strength,” it brings fresh energy to the inner man! 

Take-away: A strong body is a good thing, but in times of trial, tribulation, and trouble, it is a strong, faith-filled, Holy Spirit filled, Word-filled INNER MAN that will sustain you!

Note

The Bible speaks over and over again of the importance of maintaining a strong, robust, healthy inner man. The Scriptures note that both Jesus and John the Baptist grew up strong in their inner man!

Note

Note that the Bible doesn’t focus on whether they grew up as great athletes, or healthy physical specimens—it focuses on the condition of their inner man! We see in the Bible that when Paul the Apostle prayed for the church, he focused his prayers on their inner man.

Note

When it says “in” the inner man, the Greek word actually means “into.” Like someone would pour water INTO a cup, Jesus pours strength INTO our inner man! Jesus our Savior not only calls us from death to life, from lost to found, from blind to sight when He saves us, but He sustains us in times of trial with supernatural strength in our INNER MAN!

Notice the connection between not losing heart, and the condition of his inner man, as it is—“renewed day by day.” 

*FACT: As goes your inner man, so go you! 

Now, this all leads us to HOW we can maintain a healthy, strong inner man! Well, the good news is it’s not complicated: 

  1.  Daily time with God

I know what you’re thinking: “Jeff, I know this, this is simple.” I would reply, well; “Simply heard, but not simply done.”

I know where my dogs go most frequently by the trail they form out back.  

LISTEN: All of us leave invisible but real trails like this that tell the story of what matters most to us in our daily lives.

  • There’s a trail to the refrigerator
  • a trail to the TV
  • there’s a trail to where you work
  • there may be some trails no one knows about but you and God! 

Trails can lead to good places, and they can lead to bad places. But let’s ask ourselves, is there a trail in my life leading to time with God? To the place of prayer? To daily time in His Word?

It is documented that a man named Praying Payson, “wore the hard-wood boards of his study floor into grooves where his knees pressed so often and so long.” What a trail! 

William Bramwell is famous as a Methodist preacher, but even more so for his praying. His biographer writes, “For hours at a time he would pray. He almost lived on his knees.” What a trail! 

If you had followed Jesus around like the disciples did, you would quickly have learned his trails:

Note

Jesus forged a CHURCH TRAIL—it was His custom, His lifelong habit, to go the synagogue every Sabbath! These are a couple of the reasons He grew up STRONG IN SPIRIT! 

Now, most of the trails in our lives were forged by us pursuing what we wantedand what our flesh enjoyed. But when Jesus comes into your life, he calls you to blaze some brand new trails that may not appeal to your flesh. To do it will require discipline and a decision. But if we obey Him, the NEW TRAIL will change our lives for the better every time! Like daily time with God in prayer and in the Word. 

Listen to what the Bible promises for those that carve out this new trail:

11No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

12Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees.

13“Make level paths for your feet,” so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.
